LOMA, Colo. — Water is a driving force in the American West, and today it’s at risk more than ever. Not just from overuse, not just from megadrought, but from minuscule invaders that pose a nearly unstoppable threat to the region’s rivers, lakes, dams and reservoirs.
Agri-Pulse Podcast featuring ISC Founder Dr. Pam Marrone.
“This week's Open Mic guest is Pam Marrone, Co-founder and Executive Chair of the Invasive Species Corporation. Marrone says there are over 37,000 invasive species in the world with over 3,500 that are considered harmful. Combined, these species have cost the global economy over $1 trillion dollars. As the climate warms, Marrone says these species are migrating farther north, impacting…

Having seen outbreaks of both zebra and quagga mussels in recent years. A Davis based company has been working on a solution and now has its sights set on getting rid of the golden mussel for good.
Participants emphasized IAS as a major driver of biodiversity loss. Successful case studies, including Mimosa pigra control and water hyacinth utilization, were presented. The workshop advanced national strategies and intersectoral coordination, highlighting the need for public awareness, community engagement, and international cooperation to safeguard ecosystems and livelihoods.
Across the nation, climate change must be addressed not only through direct mitigation and adaptation, but also through strategic mitigation of threats to the success of those actions. Invasive species are a significant threat to climate preparedness and resilience —their impacts fundamentally alter natural and built systems, reducing society’s ability to adapt to a changing climate.
